Intro to Partial Suspension Workshop

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT TICKETS: Purchasing a ticket provides you access to one of the 9 suspension points available at the location. Each point may be used by up to three people (e.g. self-tying / spotter, tying pairs, triads, or tying pair with support).

Description

Rope Study is offering a 2-day workshop on partial suspension. We will address skills, techniques, and experiences from both sides of the rope. The workshop is intended for those who already have experience in floor work and are ready to start adding up-lines to their bondage play. The workshop is also appropriate for those who already have suspension experience who are looking to reinforce their fundamentals.

Details

The workshop will run from 10 am to 5 pm on each day, with an hour break for lunch. The workshop will be held in downtown Richmond, VA. Exact address will be sent to confirmed participants.

What to Bring

Participants should bring rope (6-8 hanks recommended); any suspension hardware they already own (we will have loaner materials on hand for practice during the workshop); a way to take notes; snacks and drinks. Dress comfortably for tying.

Waiver

Participants will be asked to sign a waiver releasing the location and Rope Study from any liability.

Prerequisites

In general:

  • You have enough experience in floor work that you have an earned confidence and calm that isn’t easily rattled when something goes wrong.
  • You have a thorough understanding of relevant safety, anatomy, and body awareness (this last point is particularly true for bottoms).
  • You have strong and established negotiation and communication skills.

We’re expecting tops to already know how to:

  • have a good understanding of risk-mitigation and treatment for rope bondage
  • easily and accurately tie stable, solid versions of single and double-column ties
  • tie stable, solid versions of a few lower-body and a few upper-body ties (we won’t be teaching any ties/patterns in this workshop)
  • have a good understanding of placement, tension, and control

We’re expecting bottoms to:

  • have a good understanding of risk-mitigation and treatment for rope bondage
  • know how to test tension and placement in a tie for risk-mitigation and personal preference
  • have familiarity with a few lower-body and upper-body ties that work well for your body and needs
  • have at least a beginning understanding about personal decision-making and processing in rope

Schedule

The workshop will address the following:

Day One: Acquiring Skills

  • Choosing appropriate anchor points and an overview of common suspension hardware
  • Options for creating suspension points, including rings, carabiners, poles/bamboo, and vertical suspension points (hashira)
  • Communication and risk management in suspension
  • Common methods for attaching to ties and the body
  • Testing tension on a tie (structure and the bottom’s experience)
  • Common methods for managing and securing up-lines (with a focus on entering, exiting tips for both sides of the rope)
  • Responding to problems in partial suspension

Day Two: Applying Skills

  • Working with common ties in partial suspension
  • Considering order and levels in partial suspension
  • Timing, positioning, transitions, and body mechanics
  • Play and predicament in partial suspension

Tickets

ENSURE YOU MEET PREREQUISITES BEFORE PURCHASING A TICKET! By purchasing a ticket, you are affirming that you meet the prerequisites listed above. We will not take time out of instruction to teach skills that are covered by the prerequisites, as this would be unfair to other workshop participants. We may also ask you not to tie or attempt certain exercises if we feel the prerequisite skills are not in place to do so without introducing unnecessary risks. If in doubt, please contact us and we will try to help you make an assessment.
